If you took a look through the process of invention, you’d see a similar story played out for many different inventions in many different areas of specialization. There seems to be a similar growth curve no matter when the time period, or the type of invention. From cars, to airplanes, to medicine, there is a simple, and predictable pattern that every invention seemingly must go through before it comes available to the masses. A kind of vetting out process, to shake out the kinks.

The primary stage is the discovery of the new knowledge itself. Regularly in prototype form, not nearly prepared for mass consumption. The Wright brothers aircraft is a classic case in point. They by no means planned to sell flying machines, only establish that it could be done. Once they showed the world that a human could soar like a bird, that’s all it took for commerce to take over and lead it to the convenience of global air travel that we get pleasure from today.

We are currently going through a revolution of society of epic and staggering proportions. A thousand years from now, historians will look back on this era of human history, and count it as one of just a few periods where human society was irrevocably shifted into a new way of living. This “Age Of Information,” will drastically change how humans interact with each other in our own neighborhoods, and around the world.

The most recent main comparable shift in civilization that had this much impact on humankind was the invention of farming. Before the discovery of crop growing, men and women had to hunt for food, and continuously be moving around. If they stayed in one place, they would quickly die. Folks lived in bands of fifty people or so, and the separation of labor was undoubtedly separated between men and women.

Then when crop growing was invented, folks could remain in one place. For numerous generations. The partition of labor became less clear by gender. Women could farm just as well as men. And one other thing emerged with the ability to till the land. The capability to collect capital. The more farm land you controlled, the better-off you became. And the more affluent you became the more farmland you could control. This was plainly not possible in the hunter gatherer civilization.

But just as the convenience has increased, so has the dangers. One of the most prevalent frustrations that has increased in both technology and popularity is spyware and adware. If you want to know where it comes from, and what to do about it, keep reading.

First of all, spyware is any software that records any information, and then reports back to a third party. This are great if you are a parent or a boss, and are worried about how somebody is using a shared computer. This can be a real pain when the spyware was installed by somebody intending to collect information to help their marketing efforts. In the first case, it’s obvious where the spyware came from. But what about the second case?

Spyware comes from three basic sources. One of the main sources is through free downloaded software. A developer that makes a software program can still make money enough though they give it away for free. The program comes with software that collects information, and if useful information is collected, the program developer can get paid. Applications for your desktop, dubious file sharing software to download music and movies, and various other “free” software usually come with a hidden price. Be careful what you download.

In this article I’ll go over the basics of what spyware is, and how to protect yourself from it.

The general description of spyware is any software that gets installed on your computer for the purposes of secretly collecting information. Many different kinds of spyware exist for many different purposes and reasons. Basically, they all involve stealing your personal information that you would rather keep secret. Spyware can quickly slow your computer down to a crawl, and sometimes make connecting to the Internet impossible.

One particular application of spyware is a keylogger program. These software programs are designed to record every thing you type. Anonymous third parties can use them, but also parents and bosses can use them if they want to monitor exactly what is being typed on a particular computer. One bad way people can use a keylogger program is to steal your passwords or other sensitive information, like your credit card numbers, or your social security numbers.
